Soléa : developping the network of the Mulhouse agglomeration
The Group RATP has taken part in operating the urban transport network of the Mulhouse agglomeration, since 1992, through the company Soléa. This SAEM, owned principally by SITRAM (Syndicat intercommunal pour les transports de l’agglomération mulhousienne - Inter-commune Transport Union, that brings together 16 communes in the Mulhouse agglomeration), was the first European public transport company to receive the ISO 9002 certification for its workshop.
An innovative urban transport network
The Mulhouse agglomeration decided in 2002 to launch work on a project for a light rail based on the innovative tram-train system. Two linked urban lines will serve the entire and dense agglomeration. They will be completed by a third line designed to connect with the Thur valley’s rail infrastructure, in order to serve this vast suburban basin and to link it directly to Mulhouse’ city-centre.
Aim: to connect with the rail network
During the first phase, two urban lines were opened in May 2006; extensions are planned for 2008/2012. Work on the tram-train line will be launched in 2007, so it can be opened in 2010.
A modernized company to operate a new network
At the end of 2002, SITRAM renewed its contract with the Economic Interest Group formed by Soléa and RATP Développement. It assigned the operation of the network to the group, within a public utility service delegation contract, with fixed-price compensation, for 7 years, until December 31st, 2009.
RATP Développement has contributed substantial technical assistance, for both operating and maintenance, in order to prepare for the two first lines of the light rail to be opened to the public.
Soléa has also totally re-planned and updated its bus network, developed its fare range and its entire organization, while launching a new visual identity.
With the arrival of the light rail, the old bus shed has been wholly reorganized and partly re-built so as to house the busses, light rail and future tram-train.
