Clermont-Ferrand chooses an innovative public transport system

In 2002, the Clermont agglomeration began work on a tramway line equipped with an innovative transport system designed by the company Lohr Industrie: a light rail on tyres.

A partnership for an innovative transport system

In order to take up the challenge of implementing this innovative light rail, the operator of the Clermont urban transport network, T2C, wanted to join forces with a renowned company in order to compete for the contract to operate the network from 2002 to 2007.

T2C chose RATP Développement, with which it formed an Economic Interest Group. In June 2002, local authorities entrusted the group with the operation of the urban network for five and a half years.

Combining expertise to launch the project and make it a success

T2C is a local mixed economy planning company (SAEM), 65 % of which is owned by SMTC, the agglomeration’s transport organization authority (22 communes and the Puy-de-Dôme regional council).

Within the partnership, RATP Développement brings substantial technical assistance, regarding both operating and maintenance, to prepare for the opening of the light rail planned on October 14th 2006, and to give this new means of transport every chance for success.
