Annemasse: a network with a direct connection to Geneva

In 2002, RATP Développement won the bid for offers launched by Annemasse urban conglomeration to operate its urban transport network “TAC” (Transport annemassien collectif).

Developing the offer...

The organizing authority demanded the transport offer be developed, thanks to reinforced local service as well as improved fares. It also wanted the operating company to improve service quality. Added to these requests, RATP Développement suggested prolonging two lines to Switzerland, an offer that was very much appreciated by the commune community.

The company TP2A was therefore created to operate this bus network. Its shareholders are RATP Développement (51% shares) and TPG - Geneva public transport (49 %)

... and improving service quality

Network improvement took place in several stages:
- creation of new lines or additions to lines, such as the first two cross-border lines, implemented in September 2003
- increased service (presently one bus every 8 minutes)
- longer hours: the service now ends at 10 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.
- renovation of the bus fleet and street furniture

Other services were also created, namely “Taxi’ tac” (soon to become “Proxi’ Tac”). These small 9-seat vehicles, that passengers book one day in advance, transport inhabitants from low density zones to points where they can access regular lines.

Disabled people are also provided for. They too can travel around the entire Annemasse agglomeration in “handi’ tac”, whose drivers have received specific training to accompany disabled passengers.

Encouraging development perspectives

Presently, the quality aims initially set by the organizing authority have been fulfilled or are in the course of being so. The quantity results are just as satisfactory with an annual passenger increase of 20 %.

RATP Développement wishes to increase its collaboration with the organizing authority. TP2A for instance submitted the idea to local authorities of constructing a bus lane on the main road connecting Annemasse to Geneva, in order to facilitate travel.

It remains necessary to constantly improve local transport bearing in mind Annemasse agglomeration is considering implementing the CEVA express rail network (due 2012) and a light rail (due 2020).
